Ingredients We Use
We believe you deserve to know exactly what goes on your skin. Here's a transparent look at every category of ingredient we work with.
Recipe for Glowing Skin
What sets Sopothecary apart is our commitment to using only pure, purposeful ingredients — no fillers, no shortcuts. Every oil, butter, and botanical is chosen for what it actually does for your skin.
Essential Oils
What differentiates Sopothecary from many product lines are the essential oils we use in all our products — not only for their luscious scent, but also for their beneficial properties. Essential oils have been demonstrated to correct or improve many conditions of the skin (and spirit).
Carrier Oils
We love olive and coconut oil. We also use jojoba, castor, sweet almond, argan, apricot kernel, avocado, grapeseed, pumpkin seed, rosehip, evening primrose, sustainable palm, and camilla.
Nut Butters
All our soap contains shea and cocoa butter, which is our standard formula at this time. We also use mango, kokum, cupuaçu, or illipe butter in some of our products, and soy wax in others.
Water Phase
For the water phase of a product we use distilled water. We have also used aloe vera, wine, beer, rum, fruit and vegetable juices, or sea water in soap — and floral and herbal hydrosols in skincare.
Miscellaneous
We have used lard, tallow, and schmaltz to make soap. We also use beeswax, royal jelly, oat, almond, or walnut meal, honey, cocoa powder, activated charcoal, various clays, sugar, salt, herbs, spices, mineral oxides, poppy seeds, alcohol, and witch hazel in some products.
Preservatives
We use a mixture of gluconolactone and sodium benzoate to preserve some of our products, and phenoxyethanol and caprylyl glycol to preserve others. Bar soap is self-preserved with NaOH (lye), which is fully consumed during the saponification process.
